The first image that I have chosen is the Matthew Portrait. fol. 2v from The Gospel of Judith Flanders, ca 1060. The artist is not known and are among the numerous English scribes who were commissioned to make these illuminated manuscripts as personal collections for the rich people. In the portrait Mathew can be seen seated writing something. There is a winged man or angel standing beside him. Both the figures have been ascribed a halo. Matthew has his left hand resting on his cheek, as in deep though an the right hand has a quill posed on a blank manuscript.
